It does not. This classification carries no direct path to permanent residence no matter how many times it is extended, and periods of admission and renewal are granted on the basis that the qualifying investment and the intention to depart remain intact. Permanent residence requires a separate immigrant route with its own requirements.
Indefinite is not the same as permanent
Extensions can in principle continue for as long as the enterprise keeps qualifying, which leads some investors to treat the status as settled. It is not. The business must remain real, operating and more than marginal, the treaty ownership must stay above half, and each renewal looks at whether those things are still true.
Meanwhile nothing accumulates toward a green card. A household that intends to remain permanently should identify the immigrant route it will eventually use, whether an employment-based or investment-based one, and understand that starting it later can raise questions about intention that were never an issue before. There is also a practical horizon worth naming.
Children who grow up in the United States on derivative status lose it at twenty-one and may then face a difficult transition. Planning for that at the point of purchase costs nothing; planning for it at the point of loss is much harder.
