A Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil engineer must show that the actual assignment fits a listed TN profession and that the engineer meets that entry’s qualification rule. A creative title does not settle either point.
Compare functions, not marketing language
Hypothetical example: a civil engineer is asked to coordinate product demonstrations, supervise sales staff, and occasionally prepare technical designs. The employer’s letter calls the job “innovation adviser.” The first question is which duties will occupy the role in practice. If the professional engineering work is central, the record should describe designs, calculations, technical responsibility, supervisor, and credential.
If sales management predominates, a familiar title cannot turn the position into the listed profession. The applicant must also establish Canadian or Mexican citizenship and provide the specific degree, licence, or accepted alternative attached to the chosen occupation. A provincial licence may be relevant to professional practice but does not erase U.S.
licensing questions. Assemble the offer, detailed duty allocation, organizational context, degree records, and any licence evidence before travel. Do not convert a possible TN request into permission to begin work; CBP or USCIS must assess the actual temporary employment arrangement.
List the facts that are fixed by official records and the facts that depend on the future arrangement. Where a qualification, ownership position or role is uncertain, obtain the underlying record before making a categorical claim. That approach is more useful than trying to force the proposal into a preferred label.
